NATURE WEAVING

PREPARE THE ACTIVITY
Gather The Materials
  • Get two sturdy sticks that are approximately two feet long.
  • Cut four or five long pieces of heavy twine.
  • Gather long natural items which grow in your locale - willow branches, corn stalks, cattails, etc.
    Gather The Materials

Talk With The Children: Show the children the sticks and twine you are going to use to build the loom for the nature weaving. Tell them that after the loom is built, they will be able to weave willow branches, corn stalks, etc. in and out of the heavy twine. Show the children some of these materials and talk about them. Are any of them taller than the children? Which ones?

    ENJOY THE ACTIVITYEnjoy the activity
Have the children lay the two sticks in the art area. Let them help you tie strands of twine between the sticks, leaving about six inches between each strand. Hold the loom up to make sure that the twine is securely fastened to the sticks.

Bring the materials the children will weave through the loom. Because the materials are long, it may take several children weaving together to complete one row. Continue until all of the items ahve been woven and the loom is full.
